and I’m here to guide you to be the healer in yours.

MAUM

MAUM (maw-um; 마음) is a Korean word, translated as “body, mind and heart” and comes from the verb “to gather”. It has a multi-layered meaning and can often be used to describe one’s emotions, thoughts, memories and visions gathering together within the Body-Mind system and integrating into a unique, whole self.

The focus of MAUM Somatic Wellness is the gathering of the body, mind and heart - within ourselves and as a community at large. When we can balance + harmonize with the ebbs and flows of our human experience, we create alignment in our Body-Mind system with our purpose and values.

Influenced by Korean ancestral practices and ancient Asian medicine philosophies, MAUM Somatic Wellness provides an array of traditional practices for modern-day lifestyles that honors the well-being as a WHOLE.

A little bit about me

My name is Sylvia Yoo, founder of MAUM Somatic Wellness.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, my path on this healing journey has certainly been a rocky one. As a child of Korean immigrants, my childhood was fraught with tension and trauma, guised as “cultural norms”. I grew up isolated and ignored, feeling like I never belonged inside or outside of my home - the perpetual wallflower and outsider.

After the birth of my son in 2019, I entered the darkest nights of my soul when I experienced post-partum depression. The repressed trauma and emotions from the past, combined with the stress and overwhelm of new motherhood alchemized into the desire for change and to break generational cycles for my son. My son became my mirror and guide, encouraging me to confront the shadowed fragments of myself, and reconnecting me with my inner child and authentic self. Little by little, I remembered who I always was - the spirited child who ran joyfully wild and free. By providing the freedom and safety to myself now that I always needed back then, I was able to liberate myself from the masks and armor I once used for protection and open up to unconditional love. This allowed me to become more mindful of the moment and enjoy what is now presently in front of me.

My approach to guiding others is deeply rooted in ancient Asian traditional medicine (Korean Sasang Medicine, TCM, Ayurveda) and spiritual philosophies (Buddhism, Daoism, Confucianism, Shamanism). Focusing on moving the Body-Mind’s universal life-force energy (ki) through the chakra systems and meridian channels, as well as applying The Way of the yin and the yang in daily life, clients can begin to make actionable steps and progress towards living a life of balance + harmony.

Our healing journeys will not all be the same. We were each raised in our own unique environments, so our paths to awakening will also be unique. MAUM Somatic Wellness is a culmination of practices I’ve cultivated over the years. From my past lives and careers, I’ve honed my sensory skills to do what I do best for this very moment - to create an experience that awakens all the senses.

This healing framework has been successful to my overall well-being and I hope it can be as healing for you!
